Professor Alex Fornito is a Laureate Fellow of the Australian Research Council and Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University. He serves as Head of the Brain Mapping and Modelling Research Program and leads the Neural Systems and Behaviour Lab at the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health. With over 200 research outputs and 15 active projects, his work represents significant contributions to neuroscience and mental health research.
Professor Fornito's research focuses on developing innovative approaches to mapping and modeling the human brain in both health and disease states. His work specifically targets understanding foundational principles of brain organization and their genetic basis, characterizing brain disturbances in psychiatric disorders, and exploring how individual variability in brain structure and function relates to behavior. His expertise spans neuroimaging, connectome analysis, and computational modeling of brain networks.
Analysis of Professor Fornito's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on reproducibility in neuroanatomical research, transdiagnostic approaches to psychopathology, cortical dynamics, and advanced computational methods for brain mapping. His work demonstrates increasing integration of machine learning techniques with traditional neuroimaging approaches, reflecting broader trends in computational neuroscience. A consistent theme across his publications is the search for robust biological mechanisms underlying psychiatric conditions.
- AW Campbell Young Scientist Award (2013)
- Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher (2017-2019)
- Club Melbourne Fellowship Finalist (2016)
Professor Fornito leads multiple significant research projects including 'Next-generation maps and models of the human brain' (2023-2027), 'Neuropharmacology of decision-making: causal brain network modelling across species' (2022-2026), and 'A network approach to mapping and modifying brain changes in psychosis' (2021-2025). His research is supported by substantial funding from the Australian Research Council, NHMRC, and international organizations. The Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, where he leads the Brain Mapping and Modelling Research Program, serves as a hub for interdisciplinary neuroscience research integrating psychology, psychiatry, and engineering approaches to understand brain function and mental health.
