Dr. James Pang is a NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow and Research Fellow at Monash University's School of Psychological Sciences. He holds adjunct roles at Queensland University of Technology (Adjunct Lecturer), the University of Queensland (Honorary Fellow), and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (Visiting Scientist). His research integrates biophysical models, neuroimaging, and brain connectivity to study mechanisms of brain function across health, disease, and species.
Education:
- PhD in Physics, University of Sydney (2019)
- MSc Physics, University of the Philippines (2014)
- BSc Applied Physics, University of the Philippines (2012)
Research Interests: Computational neuroscience, MRI-based brain mapping, connectome analysis, and neuroimaging techniques. His work focuses on geometric influences on brain function and disruptions in neuropsychiatric disorders. Recent projects include studying cortical asymmetries in psychosis and hierarchical brain organization.
Key Projects (2020–2029):
- "Are Brain-Wide Activity Patterns Governed by Simple Connectivity?" (2025–2029)
- "A new approach to mapping and modelling brain changes in clinical disorders" (2025–2029)
- NHMRC Equipment Grant for neural circuit dynamics research (2023–2024)
Awards:
- David van Essen Award (2018)
- Emerging Leader Award (2023)
- Excellence in Research Award (2023)
Labs/Teams: Active collaborations with the Turner Institute for Brain & Mental Health and international groups in computational neuroscience. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
