Dr. Alex Anthony Martinez is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), San Antonio, TX. He joined UIW in 2017 after roles as Visiting Assistant Professor at Trinity University and Adjunct Professor at St. Mary’s University. His research focuses on attenuating side effects of Parkinson’s disease treatments, particularly L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia, using rodent models and investigating endocannabinoid and PPARγ receptor systems. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from UT Health Science Center San Antonio and a B.A. in Biology from St. Mary’s University.
Education:
- Ph.D. Biomedical Science, UT Health Science Center San Antonio (2014)
- B.A. Biology, St. Mary’s University (2004)
Research Interests: The Martinez laboratory investigates novel pharmacological targets to reduce L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease. Key areas include endocannabinoid system modulation and PPARγ receptors, with recent work exploring traumatic brain injury’s role in PD progression. His work bridges basic science and translational applications in neurological disorders.
Awards:
- 2013 Best Oral Presentation, Terry Mikiten GSA Research Forum
- 2011 Pharmacology Student of the Year
Grants: NIH/NINDS F31NS073411-03 (2011-2013), validating PPARγ agonists as anti-dyskinetic drugs.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Martinez Lab at UIW, focusing on neuropharmacology and Parkinson’s disease research.
