Alessandro Testa is an Associate Professor of Social and Historical Anthropology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague. His research focuses on cultural heritage, religious studies, and identity construction in Europe, with a particular emphasis on former socialist regions and Mediterranean contexts. Testa holds a Ph.D. from the University of Messina and has held postdoctoral and visiting positions at institutions such as the University of Vienna, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, and the University of Pardubice.
His academic journey includes extensive fieldwork in Central Italy, the Czech Republic, and Catalonia, exploring topics like ritual revival, re-enchantment, and the socio-political dimensions of heritage. Testa has authored three books and numerous articles, chapters, and reviews, contributing to debates on cultural heritage policies, comparative European ethnology, and the intersections of religion and modernity. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical ethnography, addressing themes such as the impact of UNESCO’s intangible heritage policies, the persistence of pagan symbolism in modern rituals, and the role of folklore in identity formation.
Testa’s research engages with key concepts like ‘re-enchantment’ and ‘post-secularism,’ analyzing their manifestations in late modern Europe. He has organized interdisciplinary workshops, such as the 2024 Prague and its Myths conference, and contributed to global events like the ACHS 2016 conference in Montreal, where he presented on heritage’s transformative role in tourism and religious practices. His scholarly network extends across institutions in Europe and North America, reflecting his commitment to comparative and collaborative anthropology.
