Alejandro Sanchez, MD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine and a Huntsman Cancer Institute investigator. He specializes in surgical care for urologic cancers using advanced techniques and focuses on clinical trial development and translational research in renal and prostate cancers.
Dr. Sanchez earned his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Florida (Summa Cum Laude), a medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and completed residencies/fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he received the Young Investigator Award and Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science.
His research explores the interplay between body composition (e.g., sarcopenia, visceral fat) and oncologic outcomes, particularly in clear cell renal cell carcinoma. He also investigates immunotherapy, clinical trials, and genomic factors in urinary tract cancers. Recent work includes trials like NEXT (nivolumab adjuvant therapy) and RadSABR (radiation for prostate cancer).
