Alejandro Quintero Mächler is a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Harvard University, with a secondary role as Research Scholar. His research focuses on 19th-century Latin American intellectual history, emphasizing ideology, religion, and conservative thought in Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina. Quintero Mächler’s first book, Perder la cabeza en el siglo XIX (2023), explores 19th-century Spanish American literature and culture through themes like temporal experience, sacrificial mentality, and Spanish American medievalism. His current project examines Spanish American travel writings to the Holy Land, analyzing how Catholic conceptions of civilization and modernity were shaped beyond national boundaries during the late 19th century.
He has published in journals such as Hispanic American Historical Review and Anuario Colombiano de Historia Social y de la Cultura. In 2026, he will teach SPANISH 185: Eloquent Instruments of God: Catholic Intellectuals in Latin America, focusing on the intersection of religion and politics in the region.
