Alejandro Gallego Schmid

Dr. Alejandro Gallego Schmid is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Circular Economy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment at the University of Manchester’s Department of Civil Engineering and Management. He leads Tyndall Manchester’s efforts to develop circular and sustainable solutions for industrial and energy systems, focusing on climate change mitigation, renewable energy integration, and digitalization in the Global South. He holds editorial roles in journals like Sustainable Earth Reviews and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research Interests: Circular Economy, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Sustainability, Multi-criteria Decision Analysis, Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Digitalization. His work emphasizes Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Global South, addressing challenges like waste management and informal sector dynamics.

Key Projects: Leads major initiatives including BBSRC’s £1.5M project on metal recovery from industrial waste and EPSRC’s £0.4M study on sustainable research facilities. Active in global collaborations with over 40 companies like Tesla and Unilever.

Awards: Recognized as one of the top 2% cited environmental scientists (2024, Stanford) and top 0.5% in circular economy research (ScholarGPS). Received the 2025 Student Union Award for Outstanding Research Supervision.

Labs/Teams: Heads the Material Resource Management Group and leads the Resourceful Futures Challenge at Sustainable Futures. Collaborates internationally via networks like the British Standards Institution and UN LCA Initiative.
