Jhuma Sadhukhan

Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan is a globally recognized academic and researcher in environmental, energy, and chemical engineering at the University of Surrey. As the UK Lead of the Global Center for Sustainable Bioproducts and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE), she specializes in bioeconomy strategies, waste valorization, and lifecycle analysis. Her work bridges engineering, AI, and sustainability to address climate resilience and circular economy challenges.

She holds a PhD from The University of Manchester (formerly UMIST), alongside Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Previously, she worked as a Process Systems Engineer at MW Kellogg Ltd. and Technip (KTI Ltd.) in India and the UK.

Professor Sadhukhan co-leads interdisciplinary grants exceeding £50 million, including the £14 million UKRI-ELEMENTAL-Hub for metals circularity and the NSF/UKRI-funded Global Bioeconomy Center. Her research focuses on biomass strategies, biorefinery design, and greenhouse gas mitigation, with over 10 annual publications in top-tier journals. Recognized as the 2024 Vice Chancellor Researcher of the Year and among the world's top 0.5% scientists by Stanford University, her contributions span policy advisory roles such as the UK's BBSRC Strategic Advisory Panel.

Her teaching includes pioneering the problem-solving-focused Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) module, which has global acclaim and received a University Learners’ Commendation. Key research outputs include advanced textbooks on biorefinery design and edited journal special issues on sustainable waste utilization and biorefinery value chains.

Her work on anaerobic digestion optimization, carbon capture utilization, and blockchain-driven carbon reduction in tourism highlights her interdisciplinary impact. She actively promotes sustainable bioenergy systems in developing nations, such as Mexico's bioeconomy policy frameworks, and has developed innovative biorefinery models integrating green hydrogen recovery and modular process design.
