Dr. Fionnuala Murphy is a Research Fellow at the UCD School of Biosystems & Food Engineering within University College Dublin. Her work focuses on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of bio-based systems, spanning bioenergy, algae biorefineries, agri-food waste valorization, and plastic waste repurposing. She contributes to major European projects like AgroCycle, AgriChemWhey, and SpiralG, aiming to build sustainable bioeconomies by optimizing resource use and minimizing environmental impacts.
Murphy’s research encompasses:
- Environmental auditing of bioenergy systems (e.g., palm kernel shells for electricity)
- Development of industrial-scale biorefineries for dairy byproducts
- Assessing scalable solutions for seaweed cultivation and marine resource utilization
- Advancing circular economy models through waste-to-energy cascading systems
Her publications highlight trends in LCA methodologies, biorefinery design, and real-time monitoring technologies for sustainability. Collaborations with industry partners like TRIFOL, Glanbia, and European research teams underscore her applied approach to environmental engineering.
