Professor Alec William Welsh is a subspecialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) with advanced qualifications in Digital Imaging and Fetal Imaging, including a PhD. He holds the academic title of Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of New South Wales and leads the Perinatal Imaging Research Group at the Royal Hospital for Women & NSW Fetal Therapy Centre in Randwick, NSW. His clinical expertise spans obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine.
Research interests include:
- Application of novel Doppler parameters to assess fetal myocardial efficiency
- Quantification of power Doppler for regional perfusion analysis
- Trophoblast culture techniques in laboratory research
- Inflammation and pregnancy complications
- Clinical obstetric studies
- Interdisciplinary approaches integrating biomedical engineering
As UNSW Postgraduate Chair, Discipline to Women's Health, he oversees research supervision at multiple levels (ILP, Honours, Masters, PhD) and mentors students in fetal imaging, clinical obstetrics, and collaborative research. He has supervised 40-50 ILP and Honours projects over the past decade and maintains affiliations with professional bodies like RANZCOG, RCOG, ISUOG, and GAICD.
