Alec Rickard is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning) at the School of Health Professions, University of Plymouth. He has been a core member of the Physiotherapy team since 2005, serving as Programme Lead for the MPhysio (Hons) and BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programmes, as well as the DipHE in Operating Department Practice.
His responsibilities include leading modules such as Anatomy & Physiology, Applied Movement Science, and Movement in Health and Disease, alongside facilitating courses in Musculoskeletal Practice, Complex Case Management, and Problem-Based Learning. He also oversees the University of Plymouth's validated courses at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCNO) in London and the new partnership with IOE in Bordeaux.
Rickard has extensive experience in clinical education, supporting students on placements and engaging in outreach initiatives like the Plymouth Half Marathon physiotherapy service and the University's Occupational Health Physiotherapy Clinic. His prior NHS work focused on chronic pain management, including the development of physio-led biopsychosocial exercise programmes and an Extended Scope Practitioner role in a local Pain Clinic.
He has held leadership roles in the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), including chairing the CSP South West Regional Network (2021–2024) and the national admissions tutors' forum. His research and teaching emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, chronic pain, and innovative clinical education models.
