Alec O'Leary is a Lecturer in Guitar at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), appointed in 2018. A globally renowned classical guitarist, he specializes in Segovia/Bream traditions and modern innovations. His roles include co-director of the Guitar Festival of Ireland and luthier collaboration with his father, Michael J. O'Leary.
Educated at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama under John Feeley, he trained with Manuel Barrueco, Roland Dyens, and others. His performances focus on technical precision and creative programming, including RTE Lyric FM broadcasts and collaborations with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
Research interests span composition commissions (e.g., Leo Brouwer’s Irish Landscape with Rain), innovative teaching methods (RIAM Junior guitar ensemble), and cross-genre arrangements. He has released acclaimed albums Milonga, From the Olive Tree, and world-premiere recordings of works by Brouwer and York.
Teaching emphasizes critical thinking and ensemble skills, with contributions to online modules and progressive group pedagogy. Beyond academia, he promotes Irish guitar culture through festivals and instrument craftsmanship.
