Alberto Almarza

Alberto Almarza is an Associate Teaching Professor of Flute at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music. A native of Chile, he previously served as Principal Flutist of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago. He holds a master's degree from Carnegie Mellon, where he studied under Jeanne Baxtresser and Julius Baker. His career spans performances with prestigious ensembles such as the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Memphis Symphony, and Symphonic Orchestra of Chile. Almarza is a leading advocate for contemporary music, commissioning and premiering works by global composers.

He has collaborated with artists like Julius Baker and the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, and his recordings appear on labels including Naxos and Albany Records. As an educator, he teaches at Carnegie Mellon and participates in international festivals and masterclasses, including the Jeanne Baxtresser International Master Class. He recently joined the National Flute Association Advisory Board for New Music.

Almarza’s students have secured positions in renowned orchestras worldwide, such as the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Seoul Philharmonic. His pedagogical focus on both classical and modern repertoire underscores his commitment to advancing flute performance and education.
