Alban Janson is a Professor (Ordinarius) of Architecture and former Head of the Institute for Fundamentals of Design at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He served as Dean of the Department of Architecture from 2004 to 2008. His academic career includes professorships at Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences and the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT). He has also been a freelance architect since 1989, collaborating with Sophie Wolfrum in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Munich.
Educations:
- 1968–1973: Studied architecture at the TH Darmstadt and University of Karlsruhe (TH).
- 1973: Diploma in Architecture under Prof. Ottokar Uhl.
- 1981–1984: Studied free art at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/M., focusing on painting, graphics, sculpture, and film.
Research interests center on architectural representation, design theory, and the intersection of architecture with fine arts. His career spans academic leadership, artistic practice, and urban planning. Prior roles include research assistantships at Dortmund University and work in Tanzania’s municipal building authority.
