Professor Alastair Williams is a faculty member at Keele University's School of Humanities, specializing in musicology with a focus on modernism, Austro-German music history, and subjectivity in music. He holds a Professorship and has served as Director of Music programmes (2002–2007). His research has been supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, British Academy, and AHRC.
Education: Studied at City, University of London, completed doctoral research at Magdalen College, Oxford. Professional roles include Editorial Board membership for Music Analysis, International Advisory Panel for the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, and AHRC Peer Review College membership.
Research Supervision: Advised PhDs on jazz, performance practice, and critical musicology. Current supervision includes a study on John Zorn's stylistic diversity. Invited lectures delivered in Berlin, Basel, Belgrade, Gothenburg, and Göttingen.
Teaching: Leads courses on Twentieth-Century Musics, Film/Screen Music, Music in German Culture, and Contextual Studies. Currently External Examiner for Anglia Ruskin University's BA Music programme.
Key Achievements: Authored influential books including New Music and the Claims of Modernity (1997), Constructing Musicology (2001), and Music in Germany since 1968 (2013). Advised the London Sinfonietta's 50th Anniversary Season (2017/18).
