Dr. Reuben Phillips is a musicologist affiliated with the Faculty of Music and St Hugh’s College at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Austro-German music and culture from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a current book project examining Johannes Brahms’ preserved library of books, manuscripts, and printed music at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
- Education: PhD from Princeton University.
His research integrates music history, aesthetics, and analysis, with a particular emphasis on historical contexts of musical collections and their cultural significance. He has also collaborated on interdisciplinary projects linking musicology with archival studies and literary history.
Reuben has published in leading journals such as Journal of Musicology, 19th-Century Music, and Music & Letters. During the 2022–2023 academic year, he was supported by a supplementary research grant from the Österreichischer Austauschdienst to work at the University of Vienna’s Institute for Musicology.
