Benjamin Binder

Benjamin Binder is an Associate Professor of Music at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music, where he teaches musicology and music history. He previously taught at Lawrence University (2006–2008) and co-founded the Vancouver International Song Institute’s Song Scholarship and Performance program. His scholarly and performance work bridges musicology, criticism, and classical performance, with a focus on 19th-century Austro-German chamber music and art song.

His publications and performances highlight trends in Austro-German Lied analysis, historical performance practices, and the integration of criticism, theory, and performance. Notable works include studies of Schubert, Schumann, and Wagner, alongside co-edited volumes addressing song’s interdisciplinary dimensions.

As a pianist, Dr. Binder has performed extensively in North America, collaborated with institutions like the Carnegie Museum of Art, and served as a Tanglewood Music Center fellow. He co-founded a cross-disciplinary song program at the University of British Columbia, fostering collaboration between performers and scholars.
