Alasdair Skelton is Professor of Geochemistry and Petrology at the Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University. He currently serves as Vice Chairperson of the Education Board at Stockholm University and Chairperson for the European Civic University Hub on Climate, Environment and Energy. Previously, he was Director of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research from 2013 to 2021 and Head of Department from 2004 to 2012. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Climate Roadmap at Stockholm University.

Skelton's research spans multiple interconnected fields in Earth sciences. His work focuses on metamorphic petrology, earthquake forecasting, and understanding past climate systems. He investigates fluid-rock interactions during metamorphism, hydrochemical changes preceding earthquakes, and paleoclimate reconstruction using stable isotopes. His recent work has expanded into societal transformation related to climate change, examining how behavioral changes can reduce greenhouse gas emissions with minimal impact on quality of life. He is particularly interested in the intersection of geological processes and contemporary climate challenges.
Skelton's publications reveal a consistent focus on fluid-rock interactions across different geological settings and timescales. His work bridges traditional petrology with contemporary climate science, showing how understanding ancient Earth processes informs current climate challenges. His teaching includes courses such as 'Climate Change - a geological perspective,' 'Understanding Earth,' and 'Climate Change - An Interdisciplinary Perspective.'
Skelton is part of IGV's Geology group at Stockholm University, which studies planet Earth as a dynamic system through integrated applications of geological, geochemical and geophysical methods. His current research project 'Partnership for Anthropocene solutions' leverages expertise from multiple sectors to create climate solutions and better understand co-creative processes for climate action.
