Professor Alan Tennant is a leading academic in applied electromagnetics at the University of Sheffield, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. His career spans industry (BAE Systems, Defence Research Agency) and academia (Hull University, returning to Sheffield in 2001). He pioneered research in active radar absorbers, nonreciprocal metasurfaces, and secure wireless communication using directional antenna modulation.
Research trends in his work include orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams for radio communications, textile-based electromagnetic structures, and time-modulated antenna arrays. Key collaborations involve BAE Systems, QinetiQ, and DSTL. Supervised students include Kaleeba P N, Mufti S, and Wang Y. He contributes to the Electrical Machines and Drives Research Group and teaches modules like EEE334 and EEE6220.
