Lee Ford is a Professor of Electromagnetic Structure Design at the University of Sheffield's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He holds a BEng (1998), PhD (2003), and a Higher Doctorate (DEng, 2023). Previously, he worked at BAE Systems (2001-2005) before joining the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in 2005, advancing to Senior Lecturer (2012), Reader (2019), and Professor (2020). He serves as Director of Learning and Teaching (Strategy) and leads the Communications Research Group.
His research focuses on metamaterials, antenna design, and reconfigurable electromagnetic systems, with applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 5G communications. Ford has secured over £9.8M in research grants from EPSRC, EU, and industry, and his work includes over 30 projects and consulting contracts totaling £500k. His contributions span theoretical and applied electromagnetics, with a strong emphasis on practical implementations in communications and medical imaging.
Key research themes include direct antenna modulation, metasurface-based systems, and electrically small antennas. He has advised multiple PhD students and collaborates internationally on smart building technologies and energy-efficient RF systems. His publications reflect a blend of foundational and applied research in antennas, metamaterials, and electromagnetic materials. Awards and honors are not explicitly mentioned, but his extensive grants and industry collaborations highlight his impactful work.
