Alain Gagnon is a Full Professor in the Department of Demography at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Arts and Science. His research focuses on the long-term health impacts of early-life conditions, including infectious diseases, socioeconomic status, and migration. He has conducted extensive studies on influenza pandemics (including 1918 Spanish Flu and 2009 H1N1) and the health of immigrant populations in Canada. He also investigates historical demography and evolutionary theories, such as the grandmother hypothesis. He has authored/co-authored numerous articles in top journals like PLOS Pathogens and Nature Ecology and Evolution, and has led major research projects funded by institutions such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). He has supervised over 14 PhD and Master's students, contributing significantly to the field of biodemography and public health.
