Alain Batailly is a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. He holds the Tier-2 Canada Research Chair in Design and Optimization of Non-Regular Mechanical Systems and serves as Co-director of the Laboratory for Acoustics and Vibration Analysis (LAVA). His research focuses on nonlinear dynamics in turbomachinery systems, particularly blade/casing interactions in aircraft engines.
His research interests include rotor/stator interactions within turbomachines, bladed disks dynamics, non-linear dynamics, component mode synthesis methods, and macroscopic modeling of abradable removal. His work combines theoretical modeling, numerical simulation, and experimental validation to address complex vibration problems in aerospace applications.
Professor Batailly's publication record shows a clear focus on nonlinear structural dynamics in turbomachinery, with recent work emphasizing computational methods for analyzing blade/casing contacts, optimization of compressor blades, and development of robust numerical techniques for handling discontinuities in nonlinear systems. The Laboratory for Acoustics and Vibration Analysis (LAVA), which Professor Batailly co-directs, investigates noise and vibration issues in cutting-edge technology sectors including aviation, rail and road transport, nuclear energy production, and professional athletic equipment. LAVA employs four full-time researchers and around fifteen doctoral and master's students.
