Professor Ross specializes in dynamics, vibrations, and acoustics with particular expertise in passive damping of structures, transitory dynamics, and noise control in mechanical systems. Her research focuses on vibration confinement in composite structures, acoustic signal processing, and impact noise analysis. She investigates how to optimize composite aerospace structures for vibration control and noise reduction, with applications spanning aeronautics, terrestrial vehicles, and heat exchangers. Her work bridges fundamental mechanical principles with practical engineering solutions for real-world noise and vibration challenges.
Her recent publication portfolio reveals a strong interdisciplinary focus on acoustic metamaterials, 3D-printed sound-absorbing structures, and vibration control in composite materials. The research spans from aerospace engineering applications to architectural acoustics and even extends to biomechanics of circus performance. This diverse research portfolio demonstrates her commitment to solving vibration and noise problems across multiple domains through innovative material design and structural engineering approaches. Her work increasingly incorporates additive manufacturing techniques to create novel acoustic treatments with tailored properties.
Professor Ross has supervised 7 PhD students and 25 Master's students to completion, demonstrating her commitment to training the next generation of engineers. Her laboratory, LAVA, serves as a hub for cutting-edge research on acoustics and vibration analysis, with strong industry partnerships including Safran and collaborations with international institutions like ISAE-Supaéro in France. She has secured significant research funding through industrial chairs and collaborative projects focused on developing quieter and more efficient aerospace technologies.
The Laboratory for Acoustics and Vibration Analysis (LAVA) under Professor Ross's direction maintains state-of-the-art facilities for vibration testing, acoustic measurement, and material characterization. The lab collaborates extensively with the Center for Applied Research on Polymers and Composites (CREPEC) and the Aluminium Research Centre (REGAL), creating a multidisciplinary research environment that bridges materials science, mechanical engineering, and acoustics. Recent expansions to the lab include advanced 3D printing capabilities for fabricating custom acoustic metamaterials and hybrid structures.
