Al Tompkins is a Visiting Professor at the Department of Broadcast and Digital Journalism within Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He previously spent 25 years as senior faculty at the Poynter Institute, training thousands of journalists globally through workshops, classes, and his influential daily column. His career includes roles as a reporter, news director, and investigative journalist at WSMV-TV Nashville, a dominant station recognized as America’s most honored local TV outlet during his tenure.
Education: B.S. in Journalism from Western Kentucky University and M.A. in Journalism and Digital Design from the University of Florida, St. Petersburg. Author of the widely adopted textbook Aim for the Heart, used in over 100 university programs worldwide.
Research focuses on ethical journalism practices, multimedia storytelling, and broadcast innovation. His work has been recognized with top honors including the National Emmy, Robert F. Kennedy Award, and NPPA’s highest Sprague Award. He has advised and trained journalists at major networks like CNN, CBC, and The Weather Channel, alongside dozens of local stations.
