Aimée Boutin

Aimée Boutin is a Professor of French at Florida State University, affiliated with the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics within the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.A. from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Her specialization includes 19th-century French poetry, women writers, cultural history, gender studies, and sound studies. She has served as Associate Chair (2004-2008) and French Program Director (2008-2019). Her research explores representations of women’s voices, sonic heritage, and urban sensory experiences in 19th-century Paris, notably documented in her book City of Noise: Sound and Nineteenth-Century Paris. During her 2020-2021 sabbatical, she was a fellow at France’s Collegium de Lyon, collaborating in interdisciplinary humanities labs focused on sensory studies and urban history.

Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to literature. Courses taught include French Women Writers, Paris in the Nineteenth-Century, and Critical Theory. She has directed theses on topics ranging from 18th-century studies to postcolonial ecocriticism. Her current research examines gendered norms in railway travel during the 19th century. She has contributed to academic journals like Nineteenth-Century French Studies and organized international conferences such as NCFS 2019.

Boutin’s work bridges literary analysis with sensory and urban studies, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. She actively participates in professional organizations including the Modern Language Association and the Society of Dix-Neuviémistes.
