Polly Dickson is an Assistant Professor in German at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Her research explores nineteenth-century literary/visual cultures across German, French, and English contexts, with current focus on writers' doodles from the 1800s to present—including sketches, blots, and marginalia.
Her monograph Romanticism, Realism, and the Lines of Mimesis (2024) analyzes mimesis through arabesques, facial contours, and crosses in E.T.A. Hoffmann and Balzac. Publications investigate sensory aspects of reading/writing, material textuality, and psychoanalytic approaches. Dickson's work frequently returns to Hoffmann, examining signatures, visual-textual hybrids, and fantasies of Heimat.
Awards include the MHRA Postdoctoral Research Scholarship, Katherine Mansfield Society Essay Prize, and Society of Dix-Neuviémistes Postgraduate Paper Prize. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and previously held fellowships at Cambridge and HU Berlin.
