Aidan Sims is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics at the University of Wollongong, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. His research focuses on operator algebras, C*-algebras, and noncommutative geometry, with particular emphasis on structures arising from combinatorial objects like graphs and groupoids. He is a member of the Institute for Noncommutative Analysis (INCA) and has supervised numerous PhD and Master's students in areas such as KMS states, twisted C*-algebras, and groupoid models.
His research interests include the interplay between operator algebras and algebraic structures, the study of equilibrium states in C*-dynamical systems, and applications of cohomological data to deformations of C*-algebras. He has held leadership roles, including Vice President of the Australian Mathematical Society, and serves on editorial boards such as the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications.
Prof. Sims has contributed to foundational work on C*-algebras associated with higher-rank graphs, topological graphs, and Hilbert bimodules. His publications span over 200 articles, with recent work exploring twists over étale groupoids, Cartan subalgebras, and nuclear dimension of C*-algebras. He actively engages in teaching and mentoring, offering supervision in topics like Cartan subalgebras, twisted operator algebras, and KMS states.
His research has been supported by national competitive grants, and he collaborates internationally on projects linking operator algebras to quantum mathematics and topological materials. Prof. Sims' work bridges abstract algebraic theory with functional analytic techniques, advancing our understanding of noncommutative structures in mathematics and physics.
