Aidan Coffey is a Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, Munster Technological University (MTU), and concurrently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Microbiology, University College Cork (UCC). He holds a BSc and PhD in Microbiology from UCC, an MA in Music, and a DSc from NUI.
His research focuses on food microbiology, biocontrol strategies using bacteriophages, and virus taxonomy. He has contributed over 200 peer-reviewed papers, co-invented three patents, and proposed three virus genera and a subfamily named 'Corkvirinae'.
He has directed over 30 PhD theses and is affiliated with the APC Microbiome Ireland research centre. Notable achievements include international taxonomic recognitions and contributions to microbial biotechnology.
