Dr. Aidan Arrowsmith is a Principal Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Department of English at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research focuses on Irish literature and culture, postcolonial writing, diaspora theory, and the construction of identity among Irish migrant communities. He explores these themes through literature, drama, film, and visual culture, including works analyzing cultural events like the 2002 World Cup incident involving Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy.
Education includes degrees from Queen Mary, University of London; University of Wolverhampton; and Staffordshire University. His PhD examined 20th-century Irish diaspora literature. He has served as an external examiner at institutions such as National University of Ireland Maynooth, Edge Hill University, and Swansea University.
Current projects include a book, Fantasy Ireland: Cultural Memory and the Literature of Diaspora, and a study on Irish identity performances in Manchester since 1900. He is an editorial board member of Irish Studies Review and edited a special issue on Irishness in Britain.
Teaching emphasizes fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity in English studies. He advocates for the versatility of English graduates in diverse career paths.
