Ahmet Gürata is an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication and Design at Bilkent University's Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture. He joined the university in 2007 and holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies and Humanities from the University of London (2003) and an M.A. in Graphic Design from Bilkent University (1997).
His research focuses on film history and theory, documentary practices, and visual culture, with particular emphasis on Turkish cinema and cross-cultural reception. He contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles at sinecine: journal of film studies and Kebikeç, and participates in initiatives like the Bilkent Media Future Initiative.
Gürata has served on film festival juries, including as an advisor for Festival on Wheels, and is a member of the Turkish Association of Documentary Filmmakers and Turkish Film Critics Association. He received the Turkish Academy of Sciences’ Honorable Mention Award in 2009 for his translation work on film studies.
He teaches courses such as Film History, Turkish Cinema and Modernity, and Film and Genre. His academic contributions span publications on Turkish cinema and cross-cultural remakes, reflecting his engagement with both theoretical and applied aspects of visual media.
