Ahmed Hamila is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, University of Montreal. He is also a researcher at the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales (CÉRIUM) and the Centre de recherche en santé publique (CReSP). His academic appointments include teaching courses on international migration, sexuality and gender in migration contexts, and citizenship studies across multiple undergraduate and graduate programs in sociology, anthropology, and international studies.
Hamila specializes in international migration and gender/sexuality issues, with current research focusing on asylum policies related to sexual orientation and gender identity, healthcare access for vulnerable migrant populations, and transnational solidarities. His work employs intersectional and critical approaches to examine how LGBTQI+ migrants navigate complex systems of power, discrimination, and protection mechanisms across national contexts.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward examining the intersection of migration, sexuality, and healthcare access, with increasing attention to trans-affirmative and intersectional care models. The articles span multiple languages and geographical contexts, particularly focusing on European and Canadian asylum systems, while increasingly incorporating perspectives from the Global South and Francophone contexts.

His research teams include interdisciplinary collaborators from public health, social work, and political science.
Hamila directs the Équipe de recherche sur l'immigration au Québec et ailleurs (ÉRIQA) and participates in several research networks including Clinic Mauve (focused on transforming integrated care for LGBTQIA+ migrant communities) and the Réseau de recherche sur les savoirs citoyens (RéSCits).
