Associate Professor Ahmad Shokr is a historian specializing in modern Middle Eastern history at Swarthmore College's Department of History. His research focuses on capitalism, empire, decolonization, and social movements. He is affiliated with the Mellon Mays program. His 2025 book, Harvests of Liberation, explores Egypt’s decolonization through cotton’s role in national development under Nasser. Professor Shokr teaches courses on Middle Eastern history, colonialism, environmental history, and social movements.
- Education: Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from New York University.
His writings appear in journals like Arab Studies Journal and Critical Historical Studies, and he contributed to volumes such as The Journey to Tahrir (2012), Global Middle East (2021), and Critical Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa (2021).
