Agathe Subtil is a Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and leads the 'Genome Integrity, Immunity and Cancer' unit at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Her research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, particularly the intracellular bacterium Chlamydia, including C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae, which cause diseases such as trachoma, pelvic inflammatory disease, and pneumonia.
Her work explores the mechanisms of bacterial entry, intracellular survival, and the manipulation of host cell processes such as membrane trafficking, autophagy, and nuclear functions. She investigates how Chlamydia infection leads to DNA damage and inflammation, with implications for cervical cancer development. Her lab also studies the evolutionary connections between Chlamydia and plant organelles.
The 15 most recent publications highlight consistent research themes: Chlamydia's manipulation of host metabolism (glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation), immune evasion (via ISG15), effector protein function (e.g., CT622, CT295), and organelle remodeling (endosomes, inclusion membrane). Techniques include cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology, and metabolic labeling.
