Afreen Huq is a Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of International Business, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at RMIT University's School of Management in Melbourne, Australia. She holds a PhD and has over 20 years of academic experience, including teaching and research roles at institutions in Bangladesh, the UK, and Australia. Her research focuses on women’s entrepreneurship, gender dynamics in business, and curriculum innovation in entrepreneurship education, with a cross-disciplinary approach emphasizing empirical impact.
Her academic leadership roles include interim Head of the School of Management (2023–2024), Deputy Head of Learning and Teaching (2017–2019), and Major Coordinator for Entrepreneurship (2012–2018). She has designed transformative entrepreneurship curricula aligned with RMIT’s Active, Applied, and Authentic pedagogy, emphasizing inclusive learning and employability skills.
Her research explores themes such as gender identity’s impact on entrepreneurial behavior, resilience among migrant/refugee women entrepreneurs, and the role of social media in entrepreneurship. She has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Journal of Small Business Management and Women’s Studies International Forum.
Afreen has also worked as a gender specialist on international development projects in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, focusing on entrepreneurship for poverty reduction. She is open to supervising PhD and master’s students in topics like entrepreneurial ecosystems, SME competitiveness, and refugee entrepreneurship.
Her contributions to teaching include embedding design thinking and work-based learning in curricula, enhancing digitally enabled education, and fostering industry partnerships. She has led projects on entrepreneurial orientation, business continuity, and social entrepreneurship’s impact.
