Adam Bachstetter

Dr. Adam Bachstetter is Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, with joint appointments at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center. His laboratory investigates neuroinflammatory mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, and aging using preclinical models and molecular techniques.

Research focuses include microglial dysfunction, APOE genetics, IL-1 signaling pathways, and gut-brain axis interactions. Recent publications examine dystrophic microglia in Alzheimer's spread, T cell associations with cognitive decline, and circadian disruption effects on amyloid pathology. Current projects leverage electromagnetic TBI models and inulin interventions for neuroprotection.

Dr. Bachstetter mentors graduate and undergraduate researchers including MD/PhD candidate Jonathan Vincent studying IL-1 effects on synaptic plasticity, and Elika Moallem investigating TBI-Alzheimer's interactions. The lab employs advanced techniques from calcium imaging to neuropathological analysis.
