Dr. Abigail Lay is a Research Fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at The University of Manchester. She holds BHF Accelerator and Kidney Research UK Fellowships, focusing on diabetic vascular disease, particularly diabetic kidney disease. Her research integrates laboratory models and computational methods to identify therapeutic targets. She completed her BSc in Microbiology with Immunology (University of Leeds, 2011) and PhD in 2015 at the University of Bristol.
Research interests include molecular mechanisms of kidney disease and therapeutic target discovery. She has authored 23 publications and leads a project on DNA methylation in Diabetic Kidney Disease. Current advisees include Nancy A Smart (PhD) and Kim Godinho/Yao Lu (MSc). She serves on BMC Nephrology’s editorial board and multiple professional committees.
Key awards: BHF Accelerator Fellowship (2021), Kidney Research UK Fellowship (2022). Her work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
