Aaron Trautwein is a Professor of Mathematics at Carthage College since 1995, specializing in knot theory and mathematics education. His research focuses on harmonic knots and their applications in topology. He actively contributes to improving teaching techniques and teacher preparation through grants, including a $1.2M NSF Noyce Grant as part of an interdisciplinary team. He teaches a broad range of courses, from calculus to topology, and Western Heritage Program topics.
Education:
- B.A. in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Washington University (Phi Beta Kappa)
- M.A. in Mathematics from Saint Louis University (Pi Mu Epsilon Member)
- Ph.D. in Mathematics (Thesis: 'Harmonic Knots') from University of Iowa
Research & Awards: Recipient of Carthage’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year (2001), Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, and grants focused on mathematics education. His research spans knot theory applications and pedagogical strategies.
Service: Served as Chair of Faculty Executive Committee, Academic Senate member, and faculty representative to the Alumni Council for 20 years. Engaged in Kenosha community through Leadership Kenosha, United Way roles, and board memberships.
