Karin van IJsselmuide-Eijgenhuijsen is a Public Procurement Researcher at the KCI Knowledge Center Business Innovation, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and serves as coordinator/figurehead for the SDG 12 alliance (Responsible Consumption and Production) in the Netherlands. She represents the university in the Procurement Workshop/Knowledge Hub, a collaboration of five universities of applied sciences. Her research centers on translating public sector procurement practices into tangible sustainability tools, focusing on conscious purchasing, circular economy transitions, and SDG 12 implementation. She develops frameworks to reduce ecological footprints through practical interventions in government and organizational purchasing behaviors, aiming to align Dutch resource consumption with global sustainability timelines. Karin actively mentors students through the Minor Procurement program (including hackathons) and conducts workshops for colleagues on sustainable procurement. She drives systemic change via initiatives like the CSR Manifesto and Sustainable Procurement Manifesto, mobilizing cross-sector partnerships to advance responsible consumption. She champions individual action through her three-question purchasing model: necessity assessment, exploration of alternatives (borrowing/repairing/second-hand), and sustainable sourcing. Her 2030 vision targets aligning the Dutch Earth Overshoot Day (currently April 1) with the global date (July 25) through procurement-driven resource conservation.
