Prof Ian Stewart is a Professor in the School of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and has held academic roles at QUT since 2002, progressing from Lecturer to Full Professor in 2017. His research focuses on environmental/occupational physiology and clinical exercise physiology, with emphasis on heat stress management in industries like mining and emergency services. Key achievements include over $12 million in competitive grants, 105 journal articles (H-index 34), and supervising 29 completions. His work has influenced national heat stress protocols and informed industrial safety guidelines through collaborations with military, police, and mining sectors. He is an accredited exercise physiologist (ESSA) and certified strength and conditioning specialist (NSCA). Research interests span thermal physiology, occupational health, and wearable technology applications. Notable grants include the HERO project for heat exposure management and studies on thermal clothing for heart failure patients. His team investigates biomarkers of stress resilience and develops monitoring systems for extreme environments. Awards include the University Graduate Fellowship and Academic All-Canadian accolades. Supervision includes 11 current PhD/MPhil students, with past students securing academic and medical roles, including the 2011 Queensland Rhodes Scholar Dr Amanda Rojek.
