Dr. Mark Lyons is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education & Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick and holds an affiliation with the Sports and Human Performance Research Centre. He joined the university in 2011 after working as a Senior Lecturer at Newman University College, Birmingham, UK. His PhD focused on the effects of moderate and high-intensity exercise on sports performance.
His teaching roles include leading modules on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science (e.g., SS4403 - Coaching Science and Performance 2, SS4092 - Advanced Practices in Strength and Conditioning) and the MSc in Sports Performance (e.g., SS6042 - Strength Sports, SS6073 - Strength and Conditioning).
Lyons’ research interests center on field-based studies with practical implications for athlete preparation, including strength training, functional movement screening, training load monitoring, injury prevention, and the mental health benefits of resistance training. He collaborates on studies examining youth athlete development and has published over 185 works.
He serves as a reviewer for journals such as the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, American Journal of Human Biology, and European Journal of Sport Science.
