Senior Lecturer
Dan Makaveli is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Media Production at the University of Sunderland's School of Media and Communications. He also serves as Academic Champion for Employability and Enterprise (ACEE), focusing on integrating enterprise into the curriculum. With a Master's in Media Production from the University of Sunderland (2006/07), his career spans academic roles since 2009 alongside social entrepreneurship. He co-founded Media Savvy CIC, an award-winning social enterprise, and launched Diego’s Joint in 2022. His research emphasizes enterprise education, social innovation, and digital skills, with a practice-led approach in participatory arts and community projects. Teaching Responsibilities: He has led over 30 modules across Film Production, Broadcast Media, Sports Journalism, and Fashion Journalism. Current roles include Module Leader for courses like Guerrilla Filmmaking and Branded Content and Ecommerce Video . Research & Awards: A Senior Fellow of Advance HE, Makaveli’s work bridges academia and social impact. His research explores curriculum design for employability and enterprise, alongside external projects addressing digital isolation and community cohesion. Media Savvy CIC has received national recognition, including the 2017 “Outstanding Social Enterprise” award. Engagement: He advises national programs, judges grant allocations (up to £250k), and collaborates with NHS Trusts and governments on documentaries about mental health. His fractional (0.6-0.8 FTE) academic role reflects his dual focus on education and external ventures.
