Stephan Hartmann is a full professor and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at LMU Munich, serving as Chair of Philosophy of Science and Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and the Study of Religion. He co-directs the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP). His research focuses on philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, formal epistemology, social epistemology, and Bayesian cognitive science. Hartmann earned a Diploma in Physics and a PhD in Philosophy from Justus-Liebig University Giessen, later holding positions at Tilburg University, LSE, and the University of Konstanz. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of California Irvine, Lund University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
His work bridges formal methods with traditional philosophical inquiry, emphasizing Bayesian approaches to scientific reasoning and social epistemology. Key contributions include Bayesian Epistemology (2003) and Bayesian Philosophy of Science (2019). Current research explores reasoning and argumentation psychology, quantum systems philosophy, and deliberation models. Hartmann has held leadership roles in the European Philosophy of Science Association (2013–2017) and the European Society for Analytical Philosophy (2014–2017).
