Stephan Hartmann is Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and the Study of Religion at LMU Munich, holds the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, and co-directs the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP). His work spans philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, formal epistemology, social epistemology, and Bayesian cognitive science.

His current research examines the philosophy and psychology of reasoning and argumentation, the philosophy of open quantum systems, and formal social epistemology, particularly models of deliberation. He has authored influential works including Bayesian Epistemology (2003) and Bayesian Philosophy of Science (2019).
