Pia Riggirozzi

Professor Pia Riggirozzi is a Professor and Head of Department in the School of Social, Economic and Political Sciences at the University of Southampton, leading research within the Centre for Global Health and Policy and directing ESRC/DFID-funded projects on development and global governance.

Her research interests include:

• Political economy of development
• Global governance and international development
• Rights-based approaches to health and welfare

She investigates how Southern regional organizations frame and advocate for pro-poor welfare norms, advancing equitable development in the Global South through rights-based frameworks.

Her scholarly output, exemplified by her 2017 New Political Economy publication, demonstrates consistent focus on regional integration mechanisms and welfare policy innovation across Southern regionalisms, bridging political science, international relations, and global health disciplines.

Professor Riggirozzi directs the Centre for Global Health and Policy—a university-wide hub for social science research on global health—and has secured major external funding from ESRC and DFID for internationally collaborative research initiatives.
