Professor Pia Riggirozzi is a faculty member in the Department of Politics at the University of Southampton, serving as Head of Department. Her research focuses on the political economy of development, global governance, rights-based approaches to health and welfare, and Latin American political dynamics. She leads major projects like the ESRC-funded ReGHID initiative addressing gendered health inequalities among displaced women in Latin America and the MRC-funded EU QUERO project improving maternal and child healthcare in Brazil.
She holds a PhD from the University of Warwick (2006), with earlier degrees from the University of Miami (MSc, 2001) and FLACSO Argentina (MSc, 1997). Her work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to inclusive development and human rights. She co-directs the Global Health and Policy Centre (GHaP) at Southampton.
Current research explores displacement's impact on women and girls’ health rights, leveraging mixed-methods to inform policy. Her teaching covers global governance, political economy, and crisis studies. Supervising three PhD students, she advocates for participatory methodologies in health system strengthening.
