Dr. Morag Galloway is a Lecturer in Music and Musical Theatre, and Course Leader for the BA Musical Theatre program at York St John University. She holds a PhD in contemporary music theatre composition from the University of York (supervised by Prof. Roger Marsh), an MMus in composition from Goldsmiths College, and a 1st Class BA in Music from the University of York. Her research explores collaborative creative processes, particularly the mutuality between composers and performers, and she actively engages in interdisciplinary projects with dance and environmental justice themes.
Teaching spans BA Music, BA Musical Theatre, and MA music programs, covering composition, performance, directing, and reflective writing practices. Professional activities include roles as an Associate Composer with University of York Music Press, Northern Composers Network founder, and freelance composer/director for notable theatre productions (e.g., Sweeney Todd, Equus, and original operas like Butterfly Brain). Recent work includes collaborations with dancer Nicola Forshaw on embodied creative practices and directing climate-themed operas.
Publications include vocal works with UYMP and Juice Vocal Ensemble. Current projects include reimagining Butterfly Brain for UK school performances and a singing violist study. She also advocates for social/environmental justice through cross-university initiatives.
