Laura Bowler is a Professor of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), alongside roles at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Her work focuses on contemporary music theatre, multimedia opera, and politically/socially engaged performance. She holds a BMus (Hons) from RNCM and Sibelius Academy, an MMus/PhD from Royal Academy of Music, and an MA in Theatre Directing from RADA.
Her research explores physicality in performance, extreme vocal techniques, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Notable works include The Blue Woman (Royal Opera House commission), Wicked Problems (Royal Philharmonic Society Award winner), and Antarctica (BBC Radio 3 co-commission). She leads the Vocal Composing Group at Sound and Music Summer School.
Bowler performs internationally as a vocalist in Ensemble Lydenskab and collaborates with artists like Red Note Ensemble’s Ruth Morley. Upcoming projects include the 2024 opera Girl with the Hurricane Brain and an orchestral song cycle for Barbara Hannigan.
