Matthew R. Werner is the Dean and American Bureau of Shipping Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Webb Institute since 2015. Previously, he served as Professor (2011–2015), Associate Professor (2007–2011), and Assistant Professor (2002–2007). He holds a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute, an MBA from Long Island University (2003), and degrees in Ocean Technology and Naval Architecture from Webb Institute (B.S., 1995; M.S., 1997).
His academic roles extend to Adjunct Professorships at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (2004–2015) and Stevens Institute of Technology (2012–2015), alongside a Visiting Professorship at the University of Michigan (2012–present). He actively teaches courses on ship design, marine engineering systems, material science, and engineering mechanics, and coordinates Webb’s Sea Term program since 2010.
Research and professional contributions include panel discussions on naval engineering education, contributions to the Ship Design and Construction textbook (2004), and roles as a technical advisor for documentaries like Impossible Engineering – US Navy’s Super Submarine (2016). He is deeply involved in SNAME leadership, serving on committees and as a reviewer for its journals.
Werner’s institutional service includes roles as Director of Webb’s Material Science Laboratory, Director of the Summer Engineering Academy, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He balances academia with part-time consulting in naval architecture and marine engineering since 2002.
