Edwin G. Wiggins is the Mandell and Lester Rosenblatt Professor of Marine Engineering at Webb Institute, holding this position since 2000. Previously, he served as Dean and Professor of Marine Engineering (1987–1992) and held academic roles at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Texas A&M University at Galveston. He earned a B.S. (1965), M.S. (1968), and Ph.D. (1976) in Chemical, Nuclear, and Mechanical Engineering, respectively, from Purdue University. His non-academic career included naval service as a U.S. Navy engineer and docking officer (1965–1978).
Wiggins’s research focuses on computational methods in marine engineering, including finite element analysis, CAD integration for engineering education, heat transfer, and propulsion systems. He has authored numerous publications in journals like Computers in Education Journal and Journal of Marine Science and Application.
His awards include Fellowships from the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, along with the Distinguished Service Award (2001) and Centennial Medallion from SNAME. He also received the Best Teacher Award at the Merchant Marine Academy (1987).
Wiggins has led professional service roles such as Chair of the Faculty Honor Committee, Admissions Committee member (1978–2013), and ABET evaluator. He actively participates in organizations like ASEE and SNAME, contributing to accreditation reviews and educational initiatives.
