Matt Walley

Matt Walley serves as Adjunct Professor of Trombone in the Department of Music at Rowan University's College of the Arts, a position held since Fall 2022. He concurrently maintains significant roles as Low Brass Instructor at New York City's Lucy Moses School and Special Music School, and as Program Coordinator for The Orchestra Now at Bard College.

His academic credentials include:

• D.M.A. in Trombone Performance and Wind Band Conducting from Rutgers University (studied with Weston Sprott and Michael Powell)
• M.M. in Trombone Performance from University of Georgia (studied with Dr. Joshua Bynum)
• M.M. in Curatorial, Critical and Performance Studies from Bard College
• B.A. in Trombone Performance and Business from University of Nebraska-Lincoln (studied with Dr. Scott Anderson)

Dr. Walley's artistic research centers on trombone performance practice, orchestral brass section dynamics, and wind band conducting. His scholarly contributions manifest through the Orchestral Sectional column in the ITA Journal, where he develops practical frameworks for audition preparation and professional section collaboration. This work bridges performance practice with educational methodology, creating resources that translate real-world orchestral experiences into structured learning tools.

As an active performer, he maintains significant engagement with professional ensembles including the Atlantic Brass Band, Garden State Philharmonic, and Mid-Atlantic Opera Orchestra, with recordings broadcast internationally on WQXR and BBC Radio 4. His teaching philosophy integrates this professional activity, providing students with direct exposure to current orchestral practices and performance standards through masterclasses, ensemble collaborations, and practical audition preparation.
